Liebe Professoren und MitarbeiterInnen des Instituts für Numerische Simulation, auch in diesem Jahr verleiht das INS den Ada Lovelace-Preis für Mathematikerinnen. Die Kommission hat als Preisträgerin Frau Christina Klupsch für die beste Bachelor-Arbeit ausgewählt. Die Arbeit trägt den Titel "Elektrostatische Berechnungen auf Chlorophyllmolekuelen". Zur Preisverleihung am Freitag, den 19. Dezember 2014, 10:30 Uhr, Raum 6.020/Wegelerstr. 6, sind alle sehr herzlich eingeladen. "Performance engineering" as we define it is more than employing tools to identify hotspots and bottlenecks. It is about developing a thorough understanding of the interactions between software and hardware. This process must start at the core, socket, and node level, where the code gets executed that does the actual computational work. Once the architectural requirements of a code are understood and correlated with performance measurements, the potential benefit of optimizations can often be predicted. We introduce a "holistic" node-level performance engineering strategy, apply it to different algorithms from computational science, and also show how an awareness of the performance features of an application may lead to notable reductions in power consumption. Basic knowledge about parallel programming in Fortran or C is required. The focus is on the programming models MPI and OpenMP. Language support is given for Fortran and C. The course was developed by HLRS, EPCC, ZIH and JSC. Hands-on sessions will allow users to test and understand the basic constructs of MPI, OpenMP, Intel Inspector, VAMPIR, and other tools. On days 1-4, several parallel programming models are taught. Message Passing with MPI-3.1 is the major programming model on large distributed-memory systems in high-performance computing. OpenMP-4.0 is dedicated to shared memory systems. On the 4th day afternoon and 5th day morning, tools for debugging and analyzing parallel programs are presented. Lectures will be given by Dr. Rolf Rabenseifner (HLRS, member of MPI-3/4 Forum) and scientists of the ZIH. Social events are on a self-paying basis: - Monday: Guided city walk (free) + dinner - Wednesday: "Die Zauberfloete" (W. A. Mozart) in the Semper Opera (We have a very special and reduced price of only 10 Euro for our young PhD students and their accompanying persons - you should not be older than about 32 years and you should have a student card or a letter from your institute that you are a PhD student.
