Dear colleagues, I would like to announce a talk of my guest, Simon Gemmrich (McGill University, Montreal) Time: Monday, 11.05, 10:15 Place: Room LWK 011 (Endenicher Allee, 60, LWK Altbau) Title: "Boundary integral equations for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the unit sphere $S^2$" Abstract: In this talk I will show how standard ideas from boundary integral methods can be adapted and used to solve boundary value problems for the Laplace--Beltrami operator on the unit sphere. As an example, I will derive a direct boundary element method for the Dirichlet problem on a Lipschitz subsurface of the sphere. Some numerical examples along with basic error estimates for the single layer equation will be presented. Please feel free to forward this announcement to anyone who might be interested in. Hallo, ich habe am 01.04 in Cardiff mit meiner Promotion angefangen und bin diese Woche noch einmal in Bonn. Ich würde euch gerne diesen Mittwoch (29.04) um 15:00 zu einem Abschieds Kaffee und Kuchen im Flachbau einladen. Ich hoffe der Termin kollidiert nicht mit irgendwelchen Seminaren. Falls dem so sein sollte wäre ich froh wenn mich einer von euch darüber informieren würde. Würde mich freuen, möglichst viele von euch noch einmal zu sehen bevor ich entgültig nach Wales verschwinde. [Wissrech-dipl] WissRech Blockseminar

Liebe Teilnehmer des Blockseminars Wissenschaftliches Rechnen, unser diesjähriges Blockseminar findet vom 13.7. bis zum 17.7. statt. Wir werden montags morgens in Bonn abfahren (Details und Uhrzeit werden noch bekannt gegeben), und freitags gegen Mittag wieder in Bonn eintreffen. Das Blockseminar wird im CenterPark in Het Heijderbos[1] in den Niederlanden stattfinden, etwa zwei Autostunden von Bonn entfernt. Wir werden dort in 6er Bungalows übernachten, Bettwäsche und Handtücher werden gestellt. Um ggfs. den Fahrdienst der Uni anzufordern, bitte ich alle, die mit privatem Pkw fahren möchten, sich bei mir zu melden und zu schreiben, wie viele Personen sie ggfs. mitnehmen können. Frühstück und Abendessen sind inklusive, für Verpflegung mittags ist jeder selber zuständig (wie auch schon beim letzten Mal). Es gibt dort Verpflegungsmöglichkeiten. Wir haben einen Tagungsraum für die Vorträge. Grundsätzlich soll jeder, der mitfährt, auch einen Vortrag halten. Details hierzu und zum Vortragsplan gibts auch noch später. Die Universität kann für diese Fahrt keine Haftung übernehmen, daher bitte ich alle Studenten, genauer: alle nicht-Mitarbeiter, den angehängten Haftungsausschluss zu unterschreiben und mir ins Fach zu legen. Ohne diesen Ausschluss können wir leider niemanden mitnehmen. Die Mitarbeiter stellen bitte entsprechend Dienstreiseanträge. Dear colleagues, I would like to announce a talk of my guest, Jungho Lee (Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University) Time: Monday, 27.04, 10:15 Place: Room LWK 011 (Endenicher Allee, 60, LWK Altbau) Title: "A hybrid domain decomposition method based on one-level FETI and BDDC algorithms and its applications to contact problems" Abstract: A three-level domain decomposition is considered. Bodies in contact with each other are divided into subdomains, which in turn are divided into elements. Using an approach based on that of FETI algorithms does not lead to a scalable algorithm with respect to the number of subdomains in each body. A preconditioner based on a saddle point formulation is used which allows the use of inexact solvers and does lead to a scalable algorithm. Place: Room 610 (We6) Title: "Discontinuous finite element methods: where are the benefits?" Abstract: The interest in Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods has increased over the last few years. But of what use are they ? Discontinuous approximations do not enhance the approximation power compared to continuous approximations of the same polynomial degree, but they do introduce a large number of extra unknowns. In this talk I will give my view of the possible benefits of DG methods with applications in solid mechanics and electromagnetics.
