To whom it may concern,
here are my solutions for the first exercise sheet.

Dear students of the P4E1 machine learning lab,

here is the announced mail regarding certain organizational informations:

1) To contact us, please always use the mllab@ins.uni-bonn.de
email-address. This is also the address to send your solutions of the
exercise sheets to.

2) Since the INS Website is being renewed and we are trying out the new
system, the actual website of the practical lab (where you can actually
find the exercise sheets and the supplementary stuff and so on) is:
https://beta.ins.uni-bonn.de/teachings/ss-2018-207-p4e1-practical-lab-nu/

3) The "helpdesk" time slot, where Lisa, Jannik and I can help you with
any programming troubles is Mondays between 3 and 5 p.m. in the
Practical Lab room (6.012, Wegelerstr. 6). This will also be the time
slot in which we will schedule individual group discussions after an
exercise sheet has been due.

4) I assigned everybody to a working group. People who could not attend
the first meeting have been assigned randomly. If there is anything
wrong, please contact us or tell us next Wednesday. Note that there also
might be some changes/reassignments within the upcoming weeks due to
some people deciding not to attend the practical lab. So far, the
working groups are:

Group A: Roman Wilhelm and Kin Tung Jonathan Chan
Group B: Simon Thomä and Lara Fuhrmann
Group C: Konrad Keßler and Kevin Weigl
Group D: Janis Kemper and Lukas Erlenbach
Group E: Justus Fink and Adolfo Camacho Melo and Milos Tepavcevic
Group F: Leo Graf and Yuzhou Zhang
Group G: Janos Meny and Alexandros Gilch
Group H: Olmo Chiara Llanos and Tobias Muldee
Group I: Jerónimo García and Juleana Villegas

Since the number of participants is odd and since Adolfo has already
taken the P4E1 module before - and probably can't formally do it again
(we're going to check this), nominally there are three people in group E
right now. However, as I said, the groups might still change a bit
during the next three weeks.

If you know that you won't attend the practical lab anymore, please tell
us, so we can make the necessary adjustments as soon as possible.

5) As mentioned in the lecture: You will have to formally register for
the P4E1 module in basis yourself. Note that you have to do this until
the end of April! Note also that you cannot unregister once you registered!

6) How to get your jupyter-notebook running (in Linux - you will need
python3 to be already installed):
As shown today, the (probably) easiest way is to open a console and
create a virtual environment:

virtualenv -p python3 NameOfYourEnivornment

Once created you can always activate the environment by running

source NameOfYourEnivornment/bin/activate

Then, to install the necessary packages for python you run

pip3 install -r requirements.txt

where you can find the requirements.txt file on the website.
Finally, you can run and edit your jupyter-notebooks via

jupyter-notebook NameOfYourNotebook.ipynb

7) Exercise sheet 1 can be found on the website and is due on May 1st.
Good luck and have fun exploring!

Best regards,
Bastian Bohn
