A large number of different numerical methods have been developed for improving the efficiency of numerical simulations. Among those methods are the element-based Galerkin methods which allow arbitrary high order for the spatial discretization and promise excellent scalability on large supercomputers. The author is one of the developers of the dynamical core NUMA which is used within the next-generation weather prediction model NEPTUNE of the US Navy. NUMA incorporates many recent developments like element-based Galerkin methods and adaptive mesh refinement. The presentation gives an introduction to the solution of the Euler equations of gas dynamics with continuous (spectral element) and discontinuous Galerkin methods. Recently, the author has shown strong scaling of NUMA on more than 2.7 million threads using the continuous Galerkin method. Two test cases are considered: 1) a baroclinic instability test case by Jablonowski and Williamson (2006) on the sphere using a cubed sphere mesh and 2) a 3D rising thermal bubble test case in a cube. Liebe INS-Mitarbeiter/innen, wir benötigen eine/n studentische/n Vertreter/in für unsere INS Vorstandssitzung. Zuletzt ließ sich kein/e Student/in als Nachfolge von Alexander Schier finden. Daher möchte ich alle wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter, denen eine studentische Hilfskraft zugeordnet ist, bitten, diese daraufhin anzusprechen. @Burkow, Diehl: Bitte auch die Admins ansprechen. Damit ich weiß, ob sich grundsätzlich jemand für das Amt bereit erklärt hat, bitte ich um kurze Rückmeldung. Die studentischen Vertreter organisieren sich selbst, Interssierte müssen also selbständig eine Wahl organisieren und mir das Ergebnis mitteilen (Vertreter/in und Stellvertreter/in). [English version below] Sehr geehrte Mitarbeiter, bis auf Weiteres muessen wir die Dienste unserer Numbercruncher und des Clusters einstellen, da es ein Problem mit der Klimaanlage gibt. Aus diesem Grund mussten wir die Hardware abschalten, um Schaeden zu vermeiden. Aus dem selben Grund leuchtet die Alarm-Lampe im sechsten Stock. Die Techniker sind bereits benachrichtigt und wir halten Euch auf den Laufenden, sobald wir die Server wieder hochfahren koennen. Besten Gruss Systemadministration INS __________________________________________________ Dear staff, we have a malfunction with our air conditioning system in the server rooms and because of this the red alarm lamp is blinking in the 6th floor. Therefore we had to shut down the numbercrunchers and the cluster to save the hardware from damage. The technicians are on it, and we'll keep you informed when we can turn them back on.
